An emerald’s internal landscape is not automatically a flaw. It is part of the conversation between colour, transparency, origin and care.

Colour leads the decision

Hue, tone and saturation determine the first emotional impression. The most valuable colour for you may be a vivid balanced green, a cooler forest shade or a lighter stone with unusual luminosity.

View the gem in diffused daylight and ordinary indoor light; photography and strong spotlights can exaggerate intensity.

Understand the jardin

Emeralds commonly contain inclusions and fissures poetically called jardin, or garden. Their placement matters: a visible inclusion can add identity, while one reaching a vulnerable corner may influence durability.

Treatment disclosure matters

Clarity enhancement is common. Ask for written disclosure of treatment type and degree, and obtain an independent laboratory report for significant stones.

Future cleaning and repair must respect that treatment history.

Set for protection

Emeralds require considerate setting and wear. Protected corners, secure bezels or supportive prongs can reduce risk. Remove emerald jewellery before impact-heavy activity and avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaning unless specifically approved.
